Portland Business Journal: Provenance Helps Other Hoteliers Revamp With Local Flavor

 

In its 32 years in business, Provenance Hotels has developed its signature move.

The Portland-based hotelier has carved itself a niche in the industry by giving aging hotels a new personality - remodeling them, giving them a new name, and accenting them with an array of local flourishes, from the cuisine in the restaurant to the art on the walls.

The move has worked. In recent years, Provenance has expanded its reach into markets outside the West Coast, first with the Hotel Preston in Nashville, then the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery in New Orleans in 2014.

But with it's latest stretch of expansions, the company - founded in 1985 by Gordon Sondland - is adding a new twist. Provenance is applying that signature move - the revamping, rebranding and local flourishes - not to hotels it owns, but as a service to other hoteliers.
